Ultimate Beginner → Pro Pentester Roadmap (Sarcastic, Brutally Honest Edition)
Welcome, soon-to-be hacker.
If you're reading this, you're either:
— Confused 🔥
— Broke 🥲
— Inspired ⚡
— Or traumatised by “Learn these 900 skills to become a hacker” posts.
This roadmap is sarcastic, realistic, and actually useful.
By the end, you’ll go from **“I don’t even know Linux”** → **“I fuzz parameters while eating Maggi.”**
Stage 0 — The Harsh Truth (Before You Even Start)
Everyone wants to “be a hacker.” But nobody wants to:
- Read documentation
- Fail 50 times
- Fix Python errors at 3 AM
- Explain to your parents that “No, I am not hacking govt websites”
Stage 1 — Learn the GOD Tier Basics (Non-negotiable)
1) **Networking** — The thing 90% of beginners skip
Before hacking servers, you must know what a server is.
- TCP vs UDP
- Ports & Protocols
- DNS (Your new best friend)
- HTTP Requests
- Routing, NAT, Firewalls
2) **Linux** — Welcome to your new home
You'll spend more time in terminals than with actual people.
# If this scares you, good.
sudo rm -rf /*
(Don’t run that. Unless you hate your computer.)
- Learn Bash
- Learn File permissions
- Learn package managers
- Learn how to exit Vim (good luck)
3) **Git & GitHub** — Not optional
If your recon notes look like:
notes(2)final(FINAL)v3(updated).txt
You need Git.
Stage 2 — Tools Phase (Where You Feel Like a Hacker)
You install tools and suddenly feel like you're in a movie.
Start with:
- Subfinder (Subdomain enum)
- HTTPX (Alive checking)
- Naabu (Port scanning)
- Dirsearch (Directory brute-force)
- Nmap (The OG)
- Nuclei (Auto exploitation… kinda)
Using these tools properly is 10× more important than installing 400 tools you don’t understand.
Stage 3 — Web Pentesting (Your Core Skill)
This is where people finally realise: “Oh shit… hacking is not just running tools.”
You must master:
- XSS
- SQL Injection
- Broken Auth
- IDOR
- File Upload vulns
- SSRF / SSTI / RCE
When you reach a point where you can look at an endpoint and think “Yeh toh IDOR lag raha hai 🤨” …you’re evolving.
Stage 4 — Become a Recon Monster
People who find bugs are not lucky. They just know more places to look.
Learn:
- Asset discovery
- Wordlist creation
- Param mining
- JS recon
- Automated workflows
- Cloud misconfigurations
# Example elite recon combo
subfinder -d target.com -o subs.txt
httpx -l subs.txt -o alive.txt
naabu -list alive.txt -o ports.txt
nuclei -l alive.txt -o nuclei_hits.txt
Stage 5 — Automation & Scripting
The difference between mid-level and pro:
Pros automate things.
Learn:
- Python
- Bash
- API usage
- Building your own tools
- Creating your own Nuclei templates
Stage 6 — Reports & Responsible Disclosure
Bugs don't pay you unless you explain them clearly.
Your report must be:
- Clear
- Reproducible
- Impact-driven
- Professional
Stage 7 — The PRO Level (Welcome to Elite Tier)
- You write your own tools
- You build your own recon pipelines
- You find logic issues, not just CVEs
- You understand systems deeply
- You can break AND secure infrastructures
You no longer “run tools.” You create techniques.
The Brutally Honest Closing Line
Pentesting is not easy. But it is worth every second of confusion, excitement, and failure. If you stay consistent for 6–12 months, you will become lethal.
